Dr. Ford is an endodontist, a dental specialist qualified to treat the internal anatomy of teeth.

What is a root canal? It is the more familiar term used when referring to endodontic treatment. This procedure involves removing diseased or inflamed dental pulp from a tooth's root canal or canals.

Dental pulp is soft tissue inside the tooth that contains blood vessels and nerve tissue. When the pulp becomes diseased or injured, inflammation and pain can occur and may lead to infection and swelling. Symptoms include pain, sensitivity to cold or heat, and tenderness when chewing. The most common causes of pulpal damage are cracked or broken teeth, deep cavities, and tooth trauma.

During endodontic treatment, after the diseased or inflamed pulp tissue is removed, the canals are cleaned and medicated. The canal is then filled with a post to reinforce the tooth and permanently sealed with a new crown. The procedure usually involves minimal pain and can be completed in one or two visits.

It is important to treat inflamed, infected, or otherwise damaged teeth in a timely manner to prevent an abscess, swelling, and bone loss, which, if left untreated, could result in total loss of the tooth. Endodontic treatment is often a better option than having a tooth extracted.

If you need endodontic treatment, you will be in good hands with Dr. F. Norman Ford. He is a certified endodontic specialist striving to provide quality care for your dental needs.
